He is a Fellow of IChemE and UK representative of the EFCE Working Party on High Pressure Technology. His teaching and research interests include chemical engineering applications under extreme conditions. He has had several second- ments including to the Fawley oil refinery and BBC TV’s Tomorrow’s World. He is currently professor at the University of Strathclyde. After then completing a PhD, his academic career began at Napier University.

With approximately 10 million metric tons (MMT) hydrogen currently produced in the United States each year, the primary demand for hydrogen today is for petroleum refining and ammonia production. Hydrogen can store and deliver usable energy, but it doesn't typically exist by itself in nature and must be produced from compounds that contain it. Hydrogen is the simplest element on earth-it consists of only one proton and one electron-and it is an energy carrier, not an energy source.
